Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The core of what we practise here is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The premise is taking an opponent to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

In modern times Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become a popular combat sport providing ample opportunity for competition and access to a wide international community of practitioners.

Equipment

BJJ can be practised in a tough cotton suit called a gi which is similar to that worn in judo. It can also be practised no-gi in just shorts and t-shirt or a rash guard and shorts specifically for grappling. Each emphasises different grips, holds and techniques. We aim to practise both but beginners need not worry about purchasing a gi for the first few months.

All that is required to start is shorts and a t-shirt (for sports).

A gum shield is recommended when sparring.

Instructors

James (Jim) O'Hanlon has been involved in martial arts since childhood, starting with karate and later venturing into boxing. In 2010, he discovered grappling, particularly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which has been his passion ever since. He has achieved notable success in competition, the most high profile including silver medals at the British No-Gi Championships and IBJJF London Open (purple belt). James has also tested his skills in amateur MMA on multiple occasions. Along the way James met his friend and coach, Antanas Jasbutis, who is kindly helping to develop Malvern Grappling Club. James was promoted to black belt in 2024 by Antanas Jazbutis.

Jim O'Hanlon

Antanas Jazbutis, originally from Lithuania, began his martial arts journey with Shotokan Karate at 16. Soon after, he started learning the grappling and wrestling skills necessary for his professional career in mixed martial arts (MMA). He fought worldwide, competing in countries such as Russia, Spain, France, and Japan before immigrating to the UK in 2004. There, he began formal BJJ training and went on to win many high-profile BJJ competitions, including NAGA and the IBJJF London Open at black belt level. Continuing his MMA journey, he faced off against many of the UK's top fighters in prestigious promotions such as Cage Rage. Antanas has held a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt since 2016.
